Some Background

The Nahanni River, a large river in the North West Territories, has a long history of adventure.  Carving a path through several mountain ranges - including the ominous sounding Funeral and Deadman Ranges - it passes through a gap at the foot of Sunblood Mtn. that creates Virginnia Falls - a 92m drop, twice the height of Niagara Falls.

The river was the first UNESCO world Heritage Site in Canada.  The river figures in several parts of "Path of the Paddle" - the Bill Mason classic on canoeing.

Recently, the Canadian government announced plans for a large expansion of the park.  The locals were quite amused by the entourage that Stephen Harper (Canada's Prime Minister) brought to the North.
